How to Write Sailor Moon by kyetxian How to Write Sailor Moon by kyetxian
I must confess, from the moment I first saw it on tv, I hated Sailor Moon. I hated the hypocritical heroine, the moralistic feel-good message, the coming-of-age-saga rot, and the appalling voice acting. And lots of other things.

Then, a couple of weeks ago, I was trawling Youtube and came across an episode in Japanese. Out of curiosity, I watched... and was amazed. This was nothing like the american version I remembered! The scripting was different! The music was different! The voices suited the characters! It didn't take itself seriously! The heroine was amoral, didn't care about "the mission", and was damn happy about it! etc etc.

I thought this might have been a series-changing-over-time thing, but someone had posted a comparison - The scripting really is way off in the american version, presumably because they wanted to give it "a message" and make it an uplifting moral saga rather than what it really is - a monster-bashing show where sparkles come out of a cat's bum and the heroine has fifty different methods of screaming.

I will always be a devotee of Action and Gothic, but I've started to forgive the appalling awfulness of Sailor Moon. Therefore, I present a basic rundown of the episode formula for the original first few episodes. Enjoy!

Drawn, Inked, Photoshopped, Uploaded.

Usagi's cries, while amusing, they are earsplitting.

Actually both versions are infested with filler, slightly unnecessary comedy and weird moral lessons in my opinion, especially in the later seasons. This is probably the reason why I read the manga instead, because the anime was so different that it was horrifying. Although the English version is a whole new world of weird...

Wow. Blandest. Episode plot. Ever. I'm not saying this to offend, I'm saying it because I know it's true for Sailor Moon.
With this logic, that'd be putting Funimation's lack of casting variety and its blandness to shame.

Not surprisingly, there are a lot of people who despise the "Americanized" Sailor Moon, only to discover the original Bishojo Senshi Sailormoon and realize... A) the original was MUCH better than the dub, and B) if you are the creator of a manga/anime/light novel series in Japan, the one thing you should NEVER do is allow DiC within 10,000 light-years of it. :D (Big Grin)

The worst part is that DiC (and later Cloverway) added on the cutsie-poo "Sailor Moon Says" segments so as to make the show 'educational'. (Makes one wonder about the American education system, doesn't it? Wink/Razz )

Also, ever notice that Power Rangers follows mostly the same formula as this? I've always found Sailor Moon to be similar to Power Rangers but with more boys instead of girls because of this.
Except Power Rangers adds in a few extra steps, though not much.

In Power Rangers, this comes after Step 10 instead
11. After the random Monster Of The Week that Rita Repulsa sent out is defeated, Rita uses her powers to make the Monster revive and grow to be the size of a skyscraper.
12. The Power Rangers send in the Megazord Vehicles which combine to form the Megazord.
13. Another fight against the Monster happens, this time it being Megazord vs Giant-Sized Monster. The fight lasts really short and then the Monster dies.
14. Rita grumbles in anger and swears revenge, saying that she'll be back with another one next time.
15. The Rangers all get together and the ending proceeds as usual.

Pretty much. Though I remember back in Mighty Morphin' at least the Giant monster fights were longer than they are now.

I noticed this too. Don't forget how the battles aren't very action-packed, but it's usually just over in less than a minute, always ending with "MOON TIARA MAGIC" or something along those lines.

By the way, Queen Beryl always reminded me of Rita Repulsa from Power Rangers, who is also a dumb villain in my opinion. I mean look at them both, their tactics in trying to achieve their evil plots, the way they send out their random minions, and how they cause chaos is almost the same. Don't you agree?

Actually, that's pretty much the formula throughout the entire first two seasons, leaving out minor variations. <snicker>

Yeah, a lot of Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon fans feel your pain. I watched the "Americanized" version first, thought it was kinda cute but just okay, then saw the _real_ version... and am STILL hoping that one day the Sailor Senshi will show up and unload their most powerful attacks on DiC/Cloverway/Whatever they call themselves now. The only way that the NA version could have been worse is if Saban had been allowed to do what they planned (mix of live-action and cel animation, 'multicultural' Senshi [such as making Makoto Hispanic, Minako a 'Valley Girl'-type, etc.])... <shuddering at the thought> Now that there's going to be an updated version, I hope and pray that Kodansha licenses the rights to the English dub to a company that will do it _right_, such as ADV or Pioneer. Hopefully, everyone from Nakoko-hime herself on down learned their lesson the first time. <crossing fingers>

According to Naoko-hime, her pink hair and red eyes were inspired by albino rabbits. Personally, I think it's something in the water in Crystal Tokyo or something... -_^

I was gonna say something about how the original is much better compared to the crap you Americans go - we Germans got a faithful translation, the only things changed were attack names and Usagi being changed to Bunny - but then you mentioned seeing the original show yourself, so all is good.

Yeah, the show was like that... but I think the manga is better than the anime, anyway, cause it allowed Usagi to ACTUALLY grow up, gave some emphasis on the other characters as well and was overall more gripping. And with the new anime coming out, I'm hoping it'll be like that~

SO TRUE. But what do you expect when a talking cat chooses a 14yr old Japanese schoolgirl whose resume includes eating cake?
Manga was freaking epic but the anime holds a special place in my heart. I love Usagi's "screw you" Ima go eat a cake attitude. But if we learned anything from reluctant hero stories, it's that if you don't make the choice to do something, life will do something horrible and force you into it. And at times, that unfortunately means the local cake shop running out of cake and Usagi letting all hell break loose because of it.
I say the first season was like Buffy. Monster of the day, meet your team, generic evil villain that steals your boy toy. It was sufficient for a girl's weekly program of the 90s. R totally threw me for a loop with freakin psycho rapist/stalker Diamond. (Kids show people). Then S threw in lesbians, SuperS beastiality and Stars genderbenders. I would have to say s*** got real in Stars. That season was just crazy. The manga even more tragic. Overall, I'm happy to say I'm a huge SM fan. No other shoujo series dares to come close to it's epicness. And I've seen several.

Yeah, Sailor Moon is a seriously good series, but for me, it peaked around R and S. Those two seasons are the highlight, and both REALLY break the formula established here.

Still, for the first few episodes, this basically captures it. Up until they plow down the first general with a plane, this is basically every episode. >_<

You know, while the whole comic is funny, for some reason "Shit, cake zombies!" particularly cracks me up. So much so that when I downloaded some of the soundtrack, which weren't labeled in any way, I actually named it "Oh Shit, Cake Zombies!?" in my iTunes. XD

love the pic! And your right about the show, its really because in English they tried to make it a kids show while it wasn't meant to be in Japanese.

Fantastic. And yes, so true. And if you think the difference between the Japanese and English versions are different, you should check out the manga. While there are still some issues (in terms of crazy coincidences and pure dumb luck), it's absolutely phenomenal. It actually has a very serious tone and has much more of a flowing story to it.

So true, so true the comparison between the dub and the original. I've been watching the dub with my daughter. She's two and can't read subs yet and OMG the cheese and corn of it all...and I read Naru's dialogue here with Molly's New Yawk accent in my head.

Just shows she's a princess and not meant for this work like the others who protect her, but then she rises up and becomes the heroine she is meant to be. I prefer the manga myself. Better in story, back story and character development.,

As one of the few male fans out there, who's been convincing dub-only watchers left and right for years of the original anime...it makes me feel better to hear stories like this. To add on what people are suggesting, please give the recent redone manga releases a chance. The manga is very different, much more darker than the anime is.
